About Hair Loss

Before recommending a hair restoration treatment, we will perform a thorough review of your medical history to determine the factors contributing to your hair loss. The most common cause for hair loss in men is androgenic alopecia, commonly called male pattern baldness. This genetic condition is passed down by one or both parents. It typically affects hair follicles along the sides of the forehead and on the top of the head. In women, hair loss is most often not genetic, and instead commonly caused by conditions that can be treated including hormonal imbalance, stress, medication, and thyroid disease.

Hair Transplant Techniques

Hair transplant surgery is a cosmetic procedure that provides permanent results. While you may lose more hair over time, the hair follicles that are successfully transplanted will remain viable for a lifetime.

Hair transplant surgery is a permanent
investment in your appearance.

While techniques and technology vary, the basic process for hair transplant surgery remains constant:

  • The scalp is numbed in both the donor and transplant sites.
  • The hair in the donor site is clipped short or shaved to provide unobstructed access to the donor follicles. Often this area may be concealed after surgery by longer hair that is immediately above it on the scalp.
  • Hair follicles are harvested from the donor site, which is typically along the sides and back of the head.
  • Hair follicles are implanted into the scalp, filling in the areas that are thinning or bald.
  • Within 2 to 3 weeks the transplanted follicles may shed their hair. New hair will begin to grow back within approximately 2 to 3 months.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) involves a more invasive method for harvesting follicles than FUE. One or more strips of scalp from the donor site are surgically removed and the incisions are sutured closed. The donor strip is divided into follicular units that are implanted in the thinning area of the scalp to fill out the hairline. The donor area requires about 10 to 14 days of healing time, is left with a visible scar, and may feel permanently tight and numb.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

With follicular unit extraction (FUE), tiny grafts of 1 to 5 hairs are harvested using a specially designed instrument. The tiny holes in the donor site heal on their own in 7 to 10 days without stitches or lasting discomfort such as tightness or numbness. The grafts are then carefully transplanted into the recipient sites where there is hair loss. Dr. Chaffoo specializes in the FUE method using the NeoGraft® system because of its minimal impact to the patient and high survival rate of transplanted follicles.
