The initial step in treating hair loss is meeting Dr. Chaffoo for a consultation at the Hair Surgery Center at La Jolla Skin. During the consultation, Dr. Chaffoo asks about your specific concerns and performs a thorough physical exam. He also obtains your detailed medical history. He carefully explains each of the hair transplant options he offers and recommends the best approach for you.
Our practice features a unique team that includes board-certified dermatologist Dr. Susan Stuart, along with several highly trained and experienced hair surgery technicians. Dr. Stuart specializes in diagnosing and treating all medical causes of hair loss. In some cases, she participates in the consultation to help determine the appropriate treatment path.
The consultation is also an excellent time for you to ask questions about the procedure and Dr. Chaffoo's qualifications. He has more than 30 years of surgical experience and is the only hair transplant surgeon in the region to be certified in 3 separate surgical specialties.
Why Choose the Hair Surgery Center at La Jolla Skin
Our hair restoration practice stands out for its excellent results and track record of satisfied patients. Here are some of the factors that set us apart:
Hair transplant surgery has advanced significantly in recent years. Dr. Chaffoo specializes in hair restoration using the NeoGraft® system at our San Diego County hair center. He's so confident in the results it provides that he underwent NeoGraft hair restoration surgery himself. Read his story.
Hair transplant surgery using NeoGraft doesn't require general anesthesia. Instead, after arriving at our Center of Excellence on the campus of Scripps Memorial Hospital, you are given Valium to help you relax. The scalp is numbed with a local anesthetic in both the donor and recipient areas. We treat only one patient a day, ensuring a calm, unhurried atmosphere prevails throughout your treatment. Dr. Chaffoo oversees each procedure, supported by our team of experienced technicians with extensive training.
The procedure itself takes a few hours, varying depending on the extent of the transplant. Natural groupings of 1 to 4 hairs called follicular units are gently extracted from the donor area of the scalp and then meticulously inserted in the area where the hair is thinning. No incision is made. You may get up and walk around, eat, or use the restroom when necessary.
"You wouldn't believe how many patients tell me,
'I should have done this years ago.'" - Dr. Chaffoo
Most patients find that recovery following a NeoGraft hair transplant is a simple, pain-free process. Initially, you may experience some mild discomfort, which is manageable with non-prescription pain relief medication. Dr. Chaffoo may have you wear a bandage around your head overnight. Some patients return to work the day after surgery. Others choose to take 2 or 3 days off. The center provides each patient specific, easy-to-follow hair care instructions. You should avoid strenuous activity for a few days after the procedure.
Dr. Chaffoo schedules regular follow-up appointments to monitor the progress of the transplanted hair follicles. Because hair grows in cycles, the full results of the procedure usually take about 6 months to see.
